Suggest A Record People Won’t Have Heard…
I always try and listen to tunes by producers I haven’t heard of before, but it’s definitely hard. There’s always a big list of favourite producers and obviously I check them first. I also have favourite labels which are closely followed by an even longer list of labels that I trust to some extent, or that I always check, even if they’re not favourites.
As a result it’s not often that you get a record which comes to you in total isolation, that is to say, from an unknown producer on a label you’ve never heard of before. I guess when this happens you add that producer to the gigantic mental filofax of all the artists who have ever made a 12 you like and store it away for future reference. Sometimes it’s boggling how many records the brain can remember, old ones, new ones, even ones you just listened to on a website without buying! I guess this is part of the fun of DJing too, everyone jokes about being a “trainspotter” etc but it’s enjoyable!
Having said all that, records do still come out of the blue sometimes. So if you have some seldom mentioned favourites, post about them, or post them, in the comments below.
Here’s a couple of mine off the top my head. First, from the end of last year, H.O.S.H’s “Suestoff”. I know H.O.S.H is something to do with the Diynamic label, this is a little trancey, I like it though, for fans of Booka Shade.
On a very different tip I also really like this one, Marc Schneider’s “Sniper King” on Was Not Was from earlier this year. Sounds quite weird and zany, I read someone saying it was like Masters at Work making minimal house. Funky is definitely the word.
Inevitably someone will think “these aren’t obscure”, but that’s the nature of this kind of post I guess!
