I've been putting tracks together for 3 years and I've found they seem to have a mind of their own - I usually start out trying to achieve something and end up getting something else entirely!

Re: snare - volume down and maybe whack some top end off it with an EQ.

PS If you want to listen my tracks are on http://www.myspace.com/daraghbyrne

The synth at the start is a bit like Born Slippy. Am I allowed to say that.

I liked it though.

Fair play.

Pretty much made entirely in Ableton, with some external samples.

Thanks a lot for the tips.

it is definitely trancey. Funnily enough as I was making it I thought "hmm this is trancier than I planned", cos I started off with the d chord that begins the track which could be more house style.

It's just the direction it seemed to go in, that's kind of what I meant by not being that authoritative with the software yet, when you're just experimenting I guess you don't always know what to change to achieve a certain goal.

So yeah it certainly isn't releasable yet or anything, I want to try and re-work it a lot and add some effects, it's a bit boring towards the end maybe.

I think common consensus tends to be that the snare is too loud, will look at that too, thanks to all of you for checking this out.

agree with steve, the synth & bass work well together, though maybe a bit trancey for my tastes.
I really like the sustained synth noise on the 1st beat of each bar.
I would maybe turn the snare down a bit, I was listening loud in headphones and it nearly took my head off.

Overall I'm not sure whether it's best to judge it as a first effort or treat it like I would any other tune so I'll do both...

as a first tune I'd say really top work.
if I'd picked it up in a record shop I wouldn't have bought it but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the pile.

Excellent start. In the beginning, the important thing is to figure out how to use the equipment a bit, followed by the ability to arrange a tune - which you seem to have - I agree with the previous poster's comments. Keep it up and eventually these bits become easy and you can set your imagination free.

This is a great first effort. Your synth and bass lines are perfect compliments for each other. My only complaint is the stiffness of the drum programming, as well as its positioning in the mix (rather upfront). Obviously something that comes with time and not really discouraging at all. Keep up the good work, Ronan!
