The Weekend/Some Records

Anyone do anything worthwhile? I went to Innervisions at Fabric but I don’t remember much apart from “Orbitallife” circa 4.30am. It seemed a very good vibe in there but I’d “a lot of drink taken” so I left around 5.30am. Was anyone sentient enough to give a good account of the night? My evening ended with incoherent blabbering and words that could not be sent from brain to mouth.

I also found this record at the weekend (”found” it perched towards the top of the Beatport charts, no back pain/sweat involved) which I hastily decided may finally be the successor to the Salt City Orchestra remix of Marshall Jefferson’s “Mushrooms”. I’m talking about Jimpster’s “Slipped Disc” remix of “Momma’s Groove” by Osunlade on Strictly Rhythm. I might climb down from my “Mushrooms” comparison but this is a seriously great house record. Just the right amount of bump and that summer evening feel to it.

I really like the really dub influenced drums in this too, too often dub-house means the swing is lost completely but this record is about as neat a shuffle as you could have.

There are quite a lot of really strong releases in the last 2-3 weeks. I mean, I guess like many of you I find records I like week in week out, to the point where judging the general standard of them becomes quite hard. When you really get into house and techno I guess there could be a nuclear holocaust leaving 2 or 3 surviving producers and some of us would still be like “the scene is great, some great stuff out there!”, but I know how easy it was to do a WhatPeoplePlay roundup last week in the same week as I did a chart on this blog. That says something about what’s coming out.

So here’s a record that’s quite different. It’s Balearic but seems so grey and rainy, Pier Bucci’s remix of Ziggy Kinder, on Tiefschwarz’s Souvenir label. It’s all about those huge teardrop synth splashes, a strange deluge of emotion in a scene that’s very visceral at the moment. Perhaps by “emotion” I mean “trance”. Either way.

Heard Dimi play @ Sugar Factory in Amsterdam which wasn’t too exciting, will head off for Berlin this thursday though. Since the appartment I rent that week - mucho cheapo - is around the corner from Watergate will go there on saturday when a Pokerflat/Dessous night is hosted. Will try to visit Berghain as well, but will mainly do touristy stuff and just chill out in Friedrichschain.. Tips for after hours in Berlin this weekend are welcome though..

I wrote a bit about Innervisions yesterday, but mainly only about Soundstream because Dixon/Misc. were boring and we left just as ‘Orbitalife’ was finishing…too much beer for me too, so there was no way I could stick with Ame for much longer.

I liked Soundstream quite a bit, and I also liked it not being too busy in there.

Be thankful you didnt make it to Minitek New York (nothing to do with Mutek, just riding on their coattails of their deservedly great name for some free association)
    Absolute disaster
Don’t know if you’re aware of the shambles of extortionate proportions that happened this past weekend
A lesson on how to f*ck over your patrons
A lot of people wasted a lot of money on this festival
I hope there is refunds & compensation for all those who bought tickets prior to the festival
An apology from Minimoo nowhere to be seen for all the people who travelled to Nyc and got bait & switched from Minimoo
DJs left stranded at airports, canceled nights, no permits practically inviting fire/cops to shut down party for 5000 on Modtown Manhattan wtf???, last minutr moved party locations without telling those with tickets
