……
Just a quick note to first of all say thanks to everyone who has mailed and commented here in the last 2 months or so and offered advice about HIAF.
I have been doing a little writing in the last few weeks again, with an email discussion of 2008 between me and two other writers due to be published on RA soon. I am starting WhatPeoplePlay roundups again with one due imminently.
As for the hiatus around here, HIAF will be 3 years old in a couple of days and as people know I feel I need a change. With that in mind I’ve almost 95 per cent decided to create a new blog where I will write about books and films and anything else I happen to be interested in.
This new site will still feature about as much house/techno content as HIAF did but I aim to try and create a more universal megalomaniac online thought compound. Either that or just do something which people who don’t like dance music may enjoy from time to time.
Things I haven’t decided or am unsure of include:
- Whether I should actually create a new blog to do this or just start writing about more topics here on this one.
- Whether including other writing amongst the house/techno will dilute the value of the site to the people that read it most often.
- Whether any of this is a good idea.
Anyway I’ll think about some of these issues and hopefully talk to some of you about them too. Maybe this is a good idea, maybe it won’t work, but I’m not going to rush anything. When I come back it’ll be because I’m ready or else I won’t do it.
In the meantime I’ll post links to any of the recent writing I’ve done and I’d also like to wish everyone who reads HIAF a happy new year.
Chat soon no doubt.

happy new year to you too!
my advise would be:
.don’t ignore this urge to broaden the scope on what you write about. it’ll enrich your readers reading experience & probably give you more satisfaction as an exhaust.
.probably better to change the name of the blog, for it to make sense [although i think it’s a shame not to use the HIAF name anymore].
.visit my blog regularly.

If I were you, I’d integrate the new stuff here, but try to come up with some smart way to allow people who are only interested in the »classic« HIAF posts to still get only those (for example by offering separate RSS feeds).
But you should also consider that HIAF has probably earned a lot of its reputation from the fact that it is has a very clear focus. Maybe you are going to lose a couple of readers if you start writing here about things that people who want to read about music are not necessarily interested in. So maybe forget what I wrote before and create a new blog – then you can still set up an »umbrella website« that automatically aggregates the content from these two blogs.

I thought that’s what the Everything Else blog was for? That hasn’t been updated since August.

yeah fair point, it was, though I’d rather not section things off so much I guess.

Creating an interdisciplinary platform here by broadening the scope of discussed topics and simultaneously preserving the current character, that HIAF is loved for, should not be problematic provided you impose a relevant structure. An eclectic approach is an exciting idea. Do it!
